In 2013, Pembroke Regional Hospital embarked on a journey to implement a Lean Management System that supports a culture of continuous quality improvement. In the Lean way of thinking, PRH relies on the expertise of our frontline workers to identify improvement opportunities, to lead change and to solve problems which results in enhanced patient care and increased staff satisfaction.

What is Lean?

The Lean Management system at the Pembroke Regional Hospital is the approach we use organization-wide to run our business everyday. Through Lean, we are committed to improving the flow of information from the front line to senior leaders and back, fostering the engagement and empowerment of all employees in quality improvement, and identifying areas of waste and eliminate anything that does not add value for patients.

Using lean principles, all members of PRH, from clinicians to operations and administration staff, continually strive to:

  • Ensure that everything that we do is adding value for our patients, and that value translates to an improved patient experience and quality of care.
  • Look at how we do our work and figure out ways to improve how that work is done.
  • Identify areas for improvement and to be involved in implementing change for the better
  • Focus on process - how to provide optimum service delivery, of the highest quality in the most efficient way!
  • Align the work we do everyday with our Quadruple Aim – Patient and Family Experience, Provider Experience, Better Health Outcomes, and Value and Efficiency and ensure that everyone knows how the work they do contributes to the success of PRH.

PRH Quality Improvement

The Annual Quality Improvement Plan is created bringing together the voice of our patients, families, community partners, Physicians, and employees to prioritize change ideas for quality improvement.

The QIP Drivers for 2022/23 that have been prioritized are:

Patient and Family Communication and Engagement

Staffing Innovation

Accreditation

Skill Development

Develop processes to improve communication and care decision involvement for patients and families receiving care.

Establish staffing models that can be implemented in 2023 to stabilize the workforce.

Assess current performance related to Accreditation Canada's Required Organizational Practices, and develop plans to ensure Accreditation Standards as part of COVID-19 recovery planning.

Improve skills among staff and management through training, mentorship, orientation.

Using the Lean Management System, 26 of our departments have improvement huddles to discuss, initiate and implement quality improvements at PRH.

The improvements range from:

1. Department specific improvement opportunities identified and worked on by frontline staff through improvement tickets. Improvements focus on improving a process and we always prioritize the improvements that have a direct impact on patient care and safety.

In 2022, 231 improvements have been made though improvement tickets so far across PRH!

2. Larger hospital-wide improvements as identified through the annual Quality Improvement Plan(QIP).
