Pembroke Regional Hospital is pleased to announce an upcoming education session on the topic of Dementia, featuring valuable information on signs, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, brain health and supportive resources that are available within our community.

 

This free event, “Understanding Dementia”, will take place on Thursday, September 10th, from 6-8 p.m. at Quality Inn Pembroke located at 900 Pembroke St. E. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

 

“Dementia touches the lives of many individuals and families across our region, and having access to reliable information and local resources can make an important difference,” said PRH President and CEO Sabine Mersmann, who will moderate the event along with Beth Brownlee, Vice-President of Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive.

 

“We are grateful to our presenters and community partners for coming together to help members of the public better understand dementia, recognize when additional support may be needed and learn where they can turn for help.”

 

The evening will feature presentations from three local health care professionals with experience in the care and support of older adults and individuals affected by dementia; Dr. Linde Corrigan, a local family physician who specializes in the care of the elderly, Kandis Meilleur, a Behavioral Support Outreach Nurse with the hospital’s Geriatric Mental Health program and Mary Mullin, a Geriatric Mental Health Outreach Nurse and Psychogeriatric Resource Consultant at PRH.

 

Attendees can expect to gain information on the following:

 

• What is dementia

• What are the different types of dementia

• What are the early signs to watch for

• What are normal signs of aging compared with the possible onset of dementia

• When to reach out to a health-care provider

• Treatments

• Behavioural support strategies

• Brain health

 

Representatives from community and health care partners will also be in attendance to provide information about their services and resources.

 

This will include: Eganville & District Seniors, Whitewater Seniors, the PRH Geriatric Day Hospital, PRH Geriatric Mental Health, Older Adult Protection Services, Ontario Health at Home, the Ottawa Valley Ontario Health Team, the OVOHT Community Connector and the PRH Foundation.

 

Pembroke Regional Hospital looks forward to welcoming community members for an informative evening focused on increased understanding, connecting people with helpful resources and supporting individuals and families affected by dementia or those wanting to learn more about it.
