19th Annual Black Bears Charity Hockey Tournament Raises $28,500 For PRH Foundation

5/3/2026

The Black Bears Charity Hockey Tournament is celebrating a major milestone next year in 2027 — its 20th anniversary — but had some incredible support in this 19th year from the community. This year, the tournament raised $28,500 for the Pembroke Regional Hospital Foundation.

Organized by security personnel from Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, the tournament began nearly two decades ago with just four teams made up of CNL employees. Today, it has grown into one of the largest adult hockey tournaments in the Upper Ottawa Valley, bringing together players, volunteers, sponsors, and fans in support of local healthcare.

“Over the past 20 years, this tournament has become something truly special,” says Daniel Venne, one of the event organizers. “What started as a small workplace event has grown into a community tradition. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who donated, volunteered, played, or came out to cheer on the teams. Your support continues to make a real difference in our local hospitals.”

Funds raised this year will support the purchase of a new ureteroscope for the Surgical Department and two IV pumps for the Emergency Department at Pembroke Regional Hospital — essential equipment that enhances patient care and supports frontline medical teams.

“We are deeply thankful to the Black Bears Charity Hockey Tournament for their continued commitment to local healthcare,” says Roger Martin, Executive Director of the PRH Foundation. “Over the past 19 years, this tournament has helped fund vital medical equipment that is not fully covered by government funding. Their generosity continues to have a lasting impact on patient care in our region.”
